8/5/2013 - ASC Holds Washington DC Technology Fair

Automotive Safety Council Washington DC Technology Fair

Washington DC:  The Automotive Safety Council (ASC) held their Technology Fair in the House of Representatives Cannon Office Building Caucus Room.  The Technology Fair’s goal is to educate and inform lawmakers and regulators about the significant technology developments occurring in the automotive safety industry. With a theme of "Auto Safety Going Forward, Tomorrow’s Technology Today, industry experts were on hand to discuss the capability, availability, implementation status and test results of seat belts, airbags, rear seat safety, child seat protection, human dummy designs, simulation modeling, rollover protection, collision warning, crash imminent braking, lane departure prevention, rear visibility, cross traffic alert, pedestrian protection and sensing technologies.

The Technology Fair was supported by Congressman Gary Peters (D-MI) and Congressman Mike Rogers (R-MI) who have numerous companies in the automotive industry in their districts.

NHTSA Administrator, David Strickland, spoke at the event about the importance of these life-saving technologies followed by a tour of the display panels.

The event was well attended and was well received.

The ASC was founded in 1961 as the American Seat Belt Council to assist in establishing uniform production and quality standards for seat belts. With the introduction of airbags, the name was changed to Automotive Occupant Restraints Council (AORC) in 1988 to better represent its diverse membership. In 2011, the organization became the Automotive Safety Council as the membership expanded to include suppliers of Active Safety products which include braking and steering systems that, when coupled with advanced sensors, mitigate or prevent accidents. The organization is international and includes manufacturers and suppliers of airbags, airbag components, seat belts, automotive seating and interior safety components, child seats, braking systems, steering systems and electronics.

The mission of the Automotive Safety Council is to improve the safety of people throughout the world through the development, production and implementation of the latest automotive safety equipment by preventing accidents, protecting occupants and pedestrians when in a collision and to notify emergency responders after the collision when necessary. The mission utilizes voluntary, regulatory and legislative directed use of these lifesaving products in order to make it available to the most people in the lowest cost manner to save the most people from injuries and fatalities.
